When an incident is reported on Citizen, a notification is sent to users in the immediate area. Notification distances are determined by population density and incident severity. If an incident appears to be escalating, there's a likeliness that public safety could be affected on a wider scale, or specialized units are called in, the notification distance increases.
A notification is also sent when a video is verified while live. When a live broadcast is verified, a notification is sent out 1 mile to New York City users and 2 miles to San Francisco users. (Read more about verified videos here.)
Finally, you can receive select notifications for escalating and confirmed incidents within the boundaries of any community you follow. (Read more about Citizen Communities here.)
